Say Goodbye to Shooting Leg Pain — Find Relief from Sciatica Naturally

Common Causes of Sciatica We See at KAW Chiropractic

Sciatica is a common condition that can cause sharp, shooting pain, numbness, or tingling that travels from the lower back down through the buttock and leg. It occurs when the sciatic nerve — the longest nerve in the body — becomes irritated or compressed. At KAW Chiropractic, we help patients across Ballarat, Alfredton, and surrounding areas find relief from the most frequent causes of sciatic pain, including:

  • Disc Bulges and Herniations – When the soft discs between your vertebrae become strained or herniated, they can press on the sciatic nerve roots, triggering pain that radiates down one leg.

  • Spinal Misalignment – When vertebrae in the lower back shift out of their optimal position, they can create tension and inflammation that irritates the sciatic nerve.

  • Piriformis Syndrome – The piriformis muscle, located deep in the buttock, sometimes tightens or spasms, compressing the sciatic nerve and causing leg pain or tingling.

  • Pelvic Imbalance – Misalignment in the pelvis or hips can alter posture and walking patterns, increasing strain on the lower back and sciatic nerve.

  • Degenerative or Arthritic Changes – Wear and tear in the lower spine can narrow the spaces where nerves exit, a condition called spinal stenosis, which can lead to sciatic nerve irritation.

  • Poor Posture or Sedentary Habits – Sitting for long periods or standing with uneven posture can tighten muscles, increase pressure on spinal discs, and contribute to nerve irritation over time.

Sciatica can make daily activities like walking, bending, or even sleeping uncomfortable — but relief is possible. At KAW Chiropractic, we use gentle, evidence-based chiropractic techniques to reduce nerve pressure, improve spinal alignment, and support natural healing.

Hey guys, Dr Steven here from KAW Chiropractic, sciatica is also one of the most common symptoms that we treat here in the practice. Now, really often it's going to be accompanied by some low back pain or discomfort, but not always. So a lot of people are aware that sciatica is when the nerves that travel down your leg, they're under stress, they're interfered with, and they cause that discomfort. Now it's really important to understand why these nerves get under stress if we want to actually treat it properly and get a long term solution for it. So with each of the joints down in the lower back and in the pelvis and all the way up the spine, it's really important that they have proper movement through that segment. That proper movement allows everything in and around attaching to the joint to function properly, including the nerve that comes out of that segment too. So if we start to get misalignments or dysfunctions in the segments of the spine, which puts stress onto them nerves, it's really, really common that they just won't work properly. And that's when your body's going to start giving you signals, symptoms like sciatica, like back pain, like all these different things, to let you know that something's wrong. Now, sciatica is the most common symptom, the most obvious symptom when you have issues with these nerves, but it can also cause a lot of other things. It can cause coordination issues down the leg. So it can play a role in knee pain, foot pain. It can also cause things like your bowel your bladder problems, issues with reproductive organs, the nerves control everything as well, not just the sciatic nerve. Now this actually follows the same principle all the way up the spine. So the neck equivalent of this is when you start getting pain, tingling, burning or weakness down your arms into your wrists, hands or fingers, which a lot of people do. So the way to treat this is you need to get the joints of the spine moving properly, regain function to them, that's going to take some stress off the disc, off the inflamed joint, and let that nerve start working and healing properly. To know if that's the case, you need to get a proper examination to diagnose it, and that's going to involve chiropractic examination if needed, some X rays to actually have a look at the alignment and the condition of the spine, see if there's any obvious stress on the nervous system, and that way, we just know exactly how to deal with it and get a proper long term solution. So.

  • The Chiropractor service we recommend will be based on an initial assessment of your issues. We design all treatment plans specifically for individual conditions to ensure the fastest recovery times.

  • Every case is different regarding back pain, so our treatments always begin with a whole-body assessment. Our expert team will discover the areas of your body that are causing you pain and put together a personalised treatment plan that targets these areas.

  • Drinking water helps to maintain elasticity in your muscles. Chiropractic treatment involves adjusting your muscles to support your spine and other problem areas of your body. If you don't drink enough water, your muscles may revert to their original position, which can lengthen your recovery time.

  • Your injury or complaint determines your treatment plan and the frequency of your visits to our Ballarat Chiropractors or Osteopaths. After your initial assessment, we will outline a treatment plan specific to you, which will tell you how many times a week you will need to visit.

  • Chiropractors and Osteopaths understand the bones and muscles related to your posture and where issues can arise. Through individual assessments, our team will locate the source of pain or injury and create a treatment plan based on the evidence that your body provides.

  • Not all Chiropractic or Osteopathic treatment is about cracking. Different injuries require different methods of treatment. If you are concerned about cracking as part of your treatment plan, we encourage you to speak to one of our Chiropractors or Osteopaths in Ballarat about these during your initial assessment.

  • Chiropractic treatment requires you to rest your body in a comfortable and suitable position directly after a session. You should drink plenty of water to help your body adjust to the changes that have been made and pay close attention to your posture.
