Common Causes of Back Pain We See at KAW Chiropractic

Back pain can develop for many reasons — sometimes from a single incident, but often from everyday habits that place stress on your spine over time. At KAW Chiropractic, we help patients of all ages manage and recover from a wide range of back-related issues, including:

  • Lower Back Pain – This is one of the most frequent concerns we treat. It’s often linked to long hours of sitting, poor posture, or lifting incorrectly. Lower back pain can create stiffness, tight muscles, and reduced flexibility that make everyday movements uncomfortable.

  • Spondylolisthesis – This condition occurs when one spinal bone shifts out of place and slides over the one below it. It can cause lower back discomfort, nerve irritation, or instability, and may develop from wear and tear, sports, or past injuries.

  • Disc Injuries – When a spinal disc becomes irritated, bulges, or herniates, it can press on nearby nerves and lead to sharp or radiating pain — often travelling into the hips or legs. Early chiropractic care can help manage symptoms and prevent the problem from worsening.

  • Coccyx (Tailbone) Pain – Tailbone discomfort is sometimes the result of a fall, sitting for too long, or childbirth. While small in size, the coccyx plays an important role in posture and balance, and irritation here can make sitting or bending very uncomfortable.

  • Scoliosis – This side-to-side curve of the spine can create uneven tension, muscle strain, and postural issues. Chiropractic adjustments can help improve function, reduce tension, and support a more balanced posture.

  • Postural Strain – Modern lifestyles often involve too much screen time and not enough movement, leading to forward head posture, rounded shoulders, and chronic tension. Improving alignment and spinal movement can make a big difference in how your body feels day to day.

Many of these issues build up gradually, even if the pain feels like it started overnight. Our team at KAW Chiropractic focuses on finding the underlying cause, improving spinal function, and helping you move with confidence and ease again.

If you’re struggling with back pain, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to live with it. At KAW Chiropractic, our experienced chiropractors help people across Ballarat and surrounding areas find long-term relief from back pain using safe, effective, and evidence-based chiropractic care.

Dr Stephen here from KAW Chiropractic, back pain is the most common symptom that we treat in the practice here. It's really, really common, and most people have either experienced it themselves or even currently have it now, like anything else, when you're dealing with back pain, it's really important to understand why the back pain is there. So for that, one of the easiest and most accurate ways we can do that is just by assessing the alignment and the function of your spine. Now, in a healthy spine, you're going to have a nice level pelvis that's going to set a great foundation for a really straight spine to sit on top of it. From the side, we're going to have some healthy curves in it to give it a spring, like the suspension kind of system throughout it, and that's just going to make sure that all the joints here work evenly and well. And there aren't any that are taking on more load than the others. Now, it's really common over time that when we put our bodies under stress, which everybody does, and that stress might be in the form of accumulative daily stress. So the micro traumas, that's how we're when we're spending too long sitting, how we're lifting, how we're sleeping, how we're bending, all these different things to put bits of stress onto our body. Or it can also obviously be the bigger, bigger traumas, like the macro traumas. So that's like, if we're involved in a car accident, sports injuries, slips and falls onto our tailbone, all these different things. They can put dysfunctions into the spine, which, over time, can influence how it's aligned and functioning. So it can start to alter away from that natural alignment that we want. And if it does that for a long enough period of time, it's slowly going to wear out and stress some of the joints in the back. Now, obviously that can cause pain itself. It can cause stiffness. You might start finding it really difficult to put your socks on because your lower back is really tight. But it can also start to affect all the nerves that come out of the low back and the sacrum here too. So that's where it can become much a whole body picture. So it can start to affect things like the function of your bowel, your bladder, your reproductive organs. It can obviously send sciatic symptoms down your legs or even cause weakness. It's a really big flow on effect, and it's important that, if this is what's causing your sciatica, your back pain, all these different issues, to actually address that issue, get the alignment back, get each of these joints working properly, take stress off them, bulging discs, and let it all heal. The best way to do that and know if that's the problem causing your pain is you just need to get it checked. You need to go through a thorough examination if it's needed. You can have X rays so you can actually see the spine and see what you're working with. And it all just makes it much easier to work with and manage in the long term. You

  • The Chiropractor service we recommend will be based on an initial assessment of your issues. We design all treatment plans specifically for individual conditions to ensure the fastest recovery times.

  • Every case is different regarding back pain, so our treatments always begin with a whole-body assessment. Our expert team will discover the areas of your body that are causing you pain and put together a personalised treatment plan that targets these areas.

  • Drinking water helps to maintain elasticity in your muscles. Chiropractic treatment involves adjusting your muscles to support your spine and other problem areas of your body. If you don't drink enough water, your muscles may revert to their original position, which can lengthen your recovery time.

  • Your injury or complaint determines your treatment plan and the frequency of your visits to our Ballarat Chiropractors or Osteopaths. After your initial assessment, we will outline a treatment plan specific to you, which will tell you how many times a week you will need to visit.

  • Chiropractors and Osteopaths understand the bones and muscles related to your posture and where issues can arise. Through individual assessments, our team will locate the source of pain or injury and create a treatment plan based on the evidence that your body provides.

  • Not all Chiropractic or Osteopathic treatment is about cracking. Different injuries require different methods of treatment. If you are concerned about cracking as part of your treatment plan, we encourage you to speak to one of our Chiropractors or Osteopaths in Ballarat about these during your initial assessment.

  • Chiropractic treatment requires you to rest your body in a comfortable and suitable position directly after a session. You should drink plenty of water to help your body adjust to the changes that have been made and pay close attention to your posture.
